What the estimate includes
Shopify fee and profit formula
The calculator keeps customer money, payment fees, Shopify charges and your fulfillment costs separate. Buyer tax is included in the processed amount but not treated as seller revenue.
Seller revenueProduct subtotal + shipping − discount
Entered feesProcessing + transaction + conversion + allocated overhead
Order profitSeller revenue − entered fees − order costs
US plan prices and standard online card rates follow Shopify's official pricing page. Rates vary by plan, location, card and payment method, so the editable fields control the calculation.
Two payment paths
Shopify Payments versus a third-party provider
With Shopify Payments as the processor, Shopify says merchants pay the applicable credit-card rate without an additional third-party transaction fee. A direct third-party provider charges its own processing fee, and Shopify can add the transaction rate associated with the store's plan.
Choose the mode that processed the order. Do not add the Shopify third-party transaction rate to a standard Shopify Payments order.
Official explanation: Shopify Payments fees and third-party transaction fees.
Official transaction formula
What Shopify includes in a third-party transaction fee
Shopify publishes the third-party transaction formula as product cost after discounts, plus tax and shipping charges, multiplied by the plan rate. This calculator therefore applies that fee to the complete processed amount.
Third-party transaction fee(Products − discounts + tax + shipping) × Shopify transaction rate
Processing fees from the external provider are calculated separately because the provider's percentage, fixed amount and fee base can differ.
Worked example
An $80 order on the US Basic plan
The default example has an $80 product subtotal, $5 charged shipping and $6.80 buyer tax. Shopify Payments processes $91.80 at the editable 2.9% + $0.30 rate. The calculator also allocates a $39 monthly plan and $20 in monthly apps across 100 expected orders.
Replace the example with the rate shown in Settings → Payments and the subscription amount on your Shopify bill.
Recurring overhead
Allocate plan and app costs without confusing them with payout
Plan and app charges are not deducted from each payment payout in the same way as card processing. Dividing monthly costs by expected orders provides an order-level profitability estimate. If volume changes, the allocated amount changes too.
- Low-volume stores: recurring costs have a larger effect per order.
- Annual billing: enter the effective monthly cost rather than the monthly-billing preset.
- Apps with usage fees: add a per-order amount under other Shopify fees when it belongs to the specific order.
International and tax charges
Use the exact rate shown in your store
Shopify Payments rates can vary by market, plan, card type and whether a card is international. Currency-conversion and tax-service charges are also conditional. Currency buttons in this calculator change formatting only and do not convert values.
Shopify's help center explains market, payment and currency-conversion fees. Enter a conversion rate only when it applies to the order.
Scope and limitations
What this calculator does not predict
The estimate does not predict chargebacks, refunds, reserves, tax obligations, shipping-label adjustments, Shopify Tax thresholds, app usage tiers or currency movements.
